Thousands of employees are being laid off by Amazon, Meta, Twitter and other companies due to the current economic environment. In these uncertain times, it is often hard to stay positive and find your way out of this painful experience.

If you have been recently laid off, here is a five-step approach that can help you bounce back and find your next ideal job.

1. Process your feelings — It is important to take the time to process what you are feeling: whether it is shock, remorse, grief, or something else. Often, we want to avoid our feelings and jump into the problem-solving mode. A layoff is a traumatic experience, and it is easy to internalize and impact your self- esteem. Sometimes our heightened sense of emotions may create a very different perception than the reality. Remember it was not your fault and it happened due to multiple factors like economic conditions, corporate re-prioritization by your organization. The key thing is to work on your mental health and do what has helped you in similar situations in the past. It can be helpful to work with career coaches/ mentors as well as remind yourself of all the strengths and unique attributes you bring to the table.

2. Assess your finances — When you are in a better state of mind, the next step is to assess your financial situation. Do you have an emergency fund to tap into for the next few months? Did your company offer severance or any other health benefits? If you have a partner, it may be easy to move under their health insurance. It may also be important to look into other avenues of support such as filing for unemployment to help you through this phase.

3. Get clear on what you want — Another key thing is to get really clear on what are the key things you desire in your next job. In other words, what are your non negotiables? It may feel like you do not have a choice, but YOU DO. This is one of the most critical steps for you to find a job and environment where you will thrive. This process may require you to reflect on your last few jobs and analyze what you liked or did not like about them. Make a list of non negotiables e.g. — job security, work life balance, autonomy, remote work etc. and deal breakers e.g. — toxic culture, micromanaging boss, no growth resources, or opportunities etc.

4. Start reaching out to your network — Once you are ready you can start reaching out to your network. If you like a job/role, try and find someone who works in the same organization and can make a personal introduction to the recruiter and hiring manager. Do your research on sites like Blind, Glassdoor and LinkedIn to assess things like company culture, work life balance, growth opportunities etc. Some things you can do to prepare for interviews are creating a resume/LinkedIn profile aligned with the jobs and industry you want to target. Once you get a call for an interview, take the time to learn about company values, mission, leadership team, hiring manager. You can also use resources like LinkedIn to reach out to people in similar roles to learn more about the skill sets needed to succeed in these roles.

5. Be patient and have fun: This is the last and final step in the process. Be patient with yourself and learn from your first few interviews. Jot down what went well and what didn’t go well. Apply for jobs that you really like after you have had some practice interviews. Last but not the least, have fun along the way. Enjoy the conversations, build your network and trust that the universe has got your back.
